Shemica Watkins is a dynamic dancer, choreographer, and educator whose work celebrates movement as a pathway to joy, healing, and empowerment. She will be teaching Caliwynd: A Journey of Freeness and Self-Expression through Movement and Caribbean Vibez—a high-energy dance class designed to help students release, reconnect, and reclaim their power through rhythm and flow. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, and raised in Oakland, Shemica comes from a lineage of dancers and began her training at E.O.Y.D.C. with Linda Johnson. She later studied ballet, Afro-Haitian, and Congolese dance at Laney College, and deepened her practice with Rara Tou Limen, Afro Urban Society, and instructors including Muisi-kongo Malonga and Nkeiruka Oruche. Her performance credits include the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, Dance Mission Theater, and Oakland’s Pan African Festival. Crowned the 2013 Dancehall Queen, Shemica is the originator of Caliwynd, a signature fusion of Afro-Haitian, Reggae, Soca, and Congolese styles. She currently performs with the award-winning Carnival Band Karibbean Vibrationz. Shemica envisions Caliwynd as a global movement—expanding into touring workshops, a fashion line, and a future dance studio rooted in rhythm, freedom, and cultural pride
