DESCRIPTION

Accompanied by the sounds of ngoma drumming, Kongolese dance is a central part of the ancestral inheritance of descendants of the Kongo Kingdom of Central Africa. The style is distinguished by its grounded and syncopated movements, hip/torso/shoulder isolations, and polyrhythmic footwork. Kongolese dance is a healing art form celebrated for its fluid movements and both simmering and explosive energy. This introductory class is open to all levels. Dance with bare feet or with dance shoes.

MORE DETAILS

Kiazi Malonga is a master drummer, choreographer, cultural bearer, and child prodigy of Congolese traditional arts. Raised in Oakland, California, he began playing Ngoma at age two under the guidance of his father, the legendary Malonga Casquelourd. By age 16, he became lead drummer for Fua Dia Congo and has since taught and performed internationally. Kiazi’s classes offer a powerful immersion in the rhythms, movement, and cultural context of Congolese drum and dance traditions. With a dynamic teaching style and deep respect for the lineage he represents, he invites students to connect through rhythm, rootedness, and community. Join his Bay Area Dance Week class to experience the precision, power, and spirit of Kongolese Drum in motion!
