Advanced Contemporary offers a fresh, current perspective on Western dance forms (ballet, modern, floorwork, and somatics) which converge to create contemporary dance in the U.S. Advanced contemporary students are expected to bring a deep understanding of their anatomical alignment, explore evocative imagery as a pathway to artistic expression, and proficiency in using choreography and improvisation as tools to refine their unique artistic voices. Instructor subject to change without notice.

view mapSADC is fragrance-free. MASK POLICY UPDATE (January 2024) At SADC, MASK ARE OPTIONAL for all classes and workshops. You are welcome to wear a mask, some teachers will still wear a mask but not require all students to wear masks, and masks will also be optional in the lobby, dressing rooms, and common spaces. This policy applies to all SADC locations. SADC has spare masks available at the front desk but suggest still bringing a mask in case there is a last-minute sub or change. If you or your child is immunocompromised and we were not aware of this, please connect with us to further discuss masking needs in particular classes. Reach out to Associate Director of Operations Bianca Cabrera at bianca@shawl-anderson.org or (510) 654-5921. If there is a SUB for a class who requests that all students wear masks, we will note this in the class title and description. SADC is no longer sending out Covid Exposure Notices. Important note: this Masking Policy Update is subject to change at any time.
Andrew Merrell is a queer, thirty something, SF bay-area transplant, having originally spent time in the burb life of SoCal. He holds a BA in Dance from California State University Long Beach and a MFA in Dance Creative Practice from Saint Mary’s College. Andrew has danced professionally with Keith Johnson and Dancers, Holly Johnston’s Ledges and Bones, Rogelio Lopez and Dancers, Catherine Galasso, Abigail Hosein’s ahdanco, Nina Haft and Co, Davalos Dance, Deborah Slater Dance Theater, Paufve/Dance, Rebecca Johnson and collaborators Nol Simonse and Christy Funsch. He currently teaches dance at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center and at Saint Mary’s College. Andrew has presented his own work with dance collective Stranger Lover Dreamer as well as under his own name throughout the SF bay-area. He has been commissioned to choreograph works for several universities and high school/youth ensembles. His choreographic work seeks to speak the truth about the life he leads, from the everyday emotional struggles to the esoteric questions that haunt him. He attempts to play back the world he sees around him, whether they are political constructs he rails against, or the ever-pervading pop-culture nonsense of which he partakes. His work is grounded in personal inquiry in an attempt to place, discover, understand, empathize, grow, and yet hardly ever, make sense of. Andrew feels lucky and grateful to continue to live the dancer/choreographer/teacher life, collaborating/performing/creating dance art.
