Sayawan (meaning "dance" in Filipino) Dance-a-Thon will host multiple dance-style workshops in family-friendly format from Afro-Brazilian to Zumba on Sunday, April 28 from 3-6 pm at Lake Merritt UMC in Oakland. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Brought to you by Sama Sama Cooperative, this dance-a-thon is our free annual community event and FUNdraiser with opportunities to support Sama Sama campers through food, silent auction, and more! A: Sama Sama, meaning “all together” in Tagalog, is a cooperative that runs a 4-week cultural and environmental summer camp for Filipinx youth from all over the East Bay and San Francisco. With an emphasis in Filipino language, movement and visual arts, relationship to food/land and community organizing through an environmental justice lens, our program takes a multi-disciplinary approach to educating our children and nurtures a healthy sense of self as a vital part of the Filipino diaspora and as stewards of the earth. Q: Who are leading the workshops? A: Dance and Movement Teachers in the Community who are donating their time to Sama Sama. We are grateful to Liza Erpelo (Zumba), Camille Santana (Pangalay) and Dawn Williams (Afro-Haitian), Jay Pugao (Filipino Martial Arts), and DJ Gold Gills. See the artist bios below. Q: What time are the workshops in the 3-6 time range? A: The workshops will be intermittent in the overall program in 20-30 minute ranges. You will get to try different experiences all in one place. Q: Will the event be indoors or outdoors? A: The dance floor will be in the outdoor courtyard. The spacious and airy indoors will have tables, food service, Sari-Sari store, registration and auction tables. Doors will be open to the courtyard for good ventilation. Q: Do I need to register? A: It is recommended you register at both bit.ly/sayawan2024 and bopsidy so we know you are coming. It is free!! Q: How do I get there? A: The event will be held in the Stark Room at Lake Merritt UMC in Oakland. It is bus accessible and a short walk from the Lake Merritt BART. There are two entrances: 1255 First Ave and 1330 Lakeshore Ave. Q: Can I donate to Sama Sama? A: Yes, you can donate monetarily by going to bit.ly/sayawan2024. A: Email samasamacoop@gmail.com ARTIST BIOS: Liza Erpelo (Zumba) Zumba instructor @liza_dancefitness for a dance party that’s exercise in disguise! We’ll use world rhythms and low-intensity moves to give you a total workout, combining all elements of fitness— cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility. Liza’s Zumba session is suitable for all ages and levels. Camille Santana (Pangalay) Immerse yourself in the movement and the music of the southern Philippines with the meditative Pangalay dance. Pangalay originates from the Tausug people in the Sulu Archipelago and is also commonly danced in the southern Philippines. Camille is a member of Manilatown Ancestral housed at the Manilatown Heritage Foundation, the home of the International Hotel in Chinatown. We are excited to share this collaborative and collective movement and experience with you. Dawn Williams (Afro-Brazilian) Jay Pugao (Filipino Martial Arts): Kuya Tito Jay is an educator in the community, the plant-based Chef and the Dean at the FREEdom High School in Oakland. @jasperpugao has been teaching the Filipino Martial Arts and indigenous fighting arts for 15+ years. He'll join some of his students and practitioners of the VSCK Filipino Martial Arts taught to him by his late and great Eskrima teacher, Maestro Sonny Umpad (RIP) to share the martial arts of the Philippines. DJ Gold Gills DJ Gold Gills has over 10 years of live venue DJ performance and has held residencies all over Oakland at The Layover, Starline Social Club, 811 Parliament, and more. Through his day job as a grant maker at a Bay Area foundation, Josh has also provided sound and DJing services for multiple organizational events. Gold Gills music focus is broad and inclusive, but he especially enjoys throwback 90s and 2000s RnB, Hip Hop, and Bay Area tracks. We'll see you on the dance floor!
